What is FTTH?

FTTH(Fiber To The Home), as its name implies, is an optical fiber directly to the home. Specifically, FTTH refers to the installation of optical network unit (ONU) at home users or enterprise users, which is the optical access network application type closest to users except FTTD (fiber to desktop) in the optical access series.

The remarkable technical features of FTTH are that it not only provides larger bandwidth, but also enhances the transparency of network to data format, rate, wavelength and protocol, relaxes the requirements for environmental conditions and power supply, and simplifies maintenance and installation. FTTH belongs to the access network part. Access network is the part between local office or remote module and users, which mainly completes multiplexing and transmission functions, and generally does not include switching functions. Historically, this part is also called local loop or subscriber loop. According to the definition of ITU-T, FTTH means that the optical fiber reaches the door of the household, and there is no copper wire between the end office and the household. The FCC of the United States has defined a new meaning of "H" in FTTH, which includes not only families in a narrow sense, but also small commercial organizations. Based on the above two definitions, FTTH is defined as follows: FTTH takes optical fiber as the transmission medium, provides services for end users such as families and small commercial organizations to access to the telecommunication end office, and has the function of information multiplexing/demultiplexing.
